More Knowledge about DivX
Technically speaking, .divx files are based on the AVI container, but may include extra features like Xsub subtitles or chapter titles. DivX Author can also create .divx files that include DVD-like menus that can be enjoyed in DivX Ultra Certified® devices or in DivX Plus Player. DivX Certified devices will play DivX video regardless of whether they're in a .divx or .avi container.
The "DivX" brand is distinct from "DIVX" (Digital Video Express), an unrelated attempt by the now defunct U.S. retailer Circuit City to develop a video rental system requiring special discs and players. The winking emoticon in the early "DivX ;-)" codec name was a tongue-in-cheek reference to the failed DIVX system. The DivX company then adopted the name of the popular DivX ;-) codec (which was not created by them), dropped the smiley and released DivX 4.0, which was actually the first DivX version. (Note that DivX ;-) and DivX are separate products and are created by different people; the former is not an older version of the latter). The DivX name is its trademark. It is pronounced DIV-ex.
A new legal version of DivX ;-) video encoding technology, released by company called DivXNetworks.
Originally the development of DivX codec went something like this:
First there was Microsoft's MPEG-4 codec. Hackers made a more flexible version of it and started calling it DivX ;-) (note the smiley -- name was a pun towards failed DIVX pay-per-view format).
Then more people got into DivX ;-) and there became a reason to build a compatible codec that wouldn't rely on stolen Microsoft code. They formed an open source development team, called at first as OpenDivX and later on as Project Mayo.
Out of this development, a commercial company, called DivXNetworks was launched. First commercial -- although freely available -- codec that was developed by DivXNetworks was DivX v4.
Some developers that were involved with the OpenDivX/Project Mayo phase, didn't drop their open source idea and developed the codec further and now that sidekick is competing against DivXNetworks' "legal DivX" and is called XviD.
